Anirban bandyopadhyay writes: Insight Out Lambodar Nayak does not like to frame his paintings with any critical device. Is a painting an intellectual design or selfsame creation only realized through the painter? He says such arguments have been around for ages and will continue to be made anyway. He believes, however, that the artiste�s insight always plays a crucial role in the making of all the aspects of a painting. How then does one go about mapping his insight? Nayak would ideally leave the viewer to make his or her own judgment. Nonetheless, a few points may be made about some features that stand out in Nayak�s creations. In these days of poststructuralist readings, it is perhaps not an exercise of great import to try to prefigure the viewer�s response to the texts with vignettes from the artiste�s life or technical preferences. But what about sharing with the potential viewers one of the many ways Nayak�s works can be read? His academic training in Kala Bhavan and Sangeet Bhavan in Shantiniketan has endowed him with the courage to experiment with colors and forms with abandon. His themes too range widely, from the Kanwarias of Benaras�his Karmbhumi for decades now�to the tribes of Orissa�his motherland�to transcending the limits of figures with his flaming abstracts. This effortless shifts and moves back and forth are mediated, perhaps facilitated, by his singular mastery of lines and strokes.
